Figurative Sculptures

It's Too Late
air dry clay, wood, wire, paint
8x13

This piece is commenting on the issue of climate change and how it affects everyone from animals to humans. Polar bears in the North are especially effected as their habitat is melting every single day. I communicated this by putting the polar bear on top, dripping down the sculpture and on to the human who refuses to clean up the mess. The buildings floating and falling into the water are indicative of rising sea levels that are caused by polar melting.

"Polar bears could disappear by 2100 due to melting ice, climate change study says"
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/polar-bears-could-disappear-2100-due-melting-ice-climate-change-n1234439
This article describes how polar bears have long been the "poster child of the consequences of climate change". As sea ice starts to melt, the species is struggling with hunting hunting seals, their main source of food. This means they could go extinct in the wild by the end of the century.

"Why are glaciers and sea ice melting?"
https://www.worldwildlife.org/pages/why-are-glaciers-and-sea-ice-melting
"Ice acts like a protective cover over the Earth and our oceans. These bright white spots reflect excess heat back into space and keep the planet cooler." Human activities are the source of melting which is causing the planet to heat at an alarming rate. This is causing sea levels to rise subsequently causing irreversible damage all over the globe.

"Climate Activist Dies After Setting Himself on Fire at Supreme Court"

In an Earth Day protest against climate change, Wynn Alan Bruce set himself on fire and passed away in front of the Supreme Court in Washington D.C. A climate scientist and friend of Bruce, Dr. Kritee Kanko commented, “This is not suicide, this is a deeply fearless act of compassion to bring attention to climate crisis.”

Dinner & A Movie

It Means He Likes You
Various objects and materials
Inspired by the movie Fresh (2022)

This photo speaks on the theme of deception, especially from those whom are closest to you. The two plates are indicative of romantic partners where one is almost out of frame- overpowered by someone who takes advantage of them, as indicated by the knife. They grapes, a bond they once shared, now completely one sided as they walk a line between violence and romance. The photographs under the utensils represent those that had come before her. While her plate is sullied by spilled wine, her will remains strong like the flame of the candle and the jasmine flowers that signify feminine powers.

Gregor's Room

Gregor's Room
A visual response to the short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
White Copy Paper, Ink (No Adhesives)
8" x 4" x 2"

The sculpture collection reflects my perception of the short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
After Gregor is transformed into a large insect, he is confined to his bedroom where he learns to be comfortable with being a bug. Gregor's living situation quickly turns to filth and he enjoys eating rotten garbage instead of his old favorite foods. In my sculpture, I wanted to capture Gregor's room in a state of disarray and filth. He is represented by the rotten apple that his father threw at him.

Touch Assignment 2

Piece of me
Digital Photography

"Hair deeply affects people, can transfigure or repulse them. Symbolic of life, hair bolts from your head. Like the earth, it can be harvested, but it will rise again. We can change its color and texture when the mood strikes us, but in time it will return to its original form, just as Nature will in time turn to our precisely laid-out cities into a weed-way."

- A Natural History of the Senses, Diane Ackerman, page 64

Hair makes us who we are. Personally, I don't know who I would be without my hair as it makes up a big part of who I feel I am. Hair grows and changes to express who we are on the inside and when we lose up to 100 hairs a day, a small piece of us is left behind, lost in the world forever as we move on. I lose a lot of hair in the shower, leaving that part of me to get sucked down the drain and float on forever until it eventually disintegrates. I suppose I'm just floating along until I disintegrate as well.

Touch Assignment 1

Her Signature
Acrylic on canvas
8 x 11"

"Most of the cold receptors lie in the face, especially on the tip of the nose, the eyelids, lips, and forehead, and the genitals are sensitive to cold, as well. It’s our outer shell that seems to fear cold most, acting as a sentry on perpetual watch. Receptors for warmth lie deeper in the skin, and there are fewer of them. Not surprisingly, the tongue is more sensitive to heat than many other areas of the body."

- A Natural History of the Senses, Diane Ackerman, page 67

This painting was inspired by the quote above but also by infrared imaging. I watch a lot of ghost hunting shows where they use infrared to detect a ghost's cold signature which is categorized by purple or a dark blue. However, when the camera is pointed towards a living human, they have a wide range of colors. I just thought it was very interesting to see which parts of our body hold the most heat, which are sensitive to cold, and the way it helps us function.
